D is for Dough!

Trying to find good foods that started with D was not an easy task, so we decided to just have some sweet fun instead! Dough! We made semi-homemade donuts. We started in the usual manner, finding letter D magnets on the fridge. This time there were 3 of them, and Mew found them with only a little help from Jocie. Both were very eager to get started on their 'work' so they could get to the donuts. Because one of the magnets was smaller, Mew was able to use that to trace D on his paper and Jocie again matched picture words that started with D. Using Mew's new finger grip for his pencil and a homemade wrist/pencil 'strap' really helped him and he did very well! (I will have to get photos of those next time.)

Time for donuts! We kept it simple and used jumbo packaged buttermilk biscuits (the type that comes in the pre-made tubes). Using a little plastic cup from a medicine bottle(never used before) we pressed out the center holes to make them into the traditional donut shape. I heated peanut oil in a pan(deep enough to cover half the donut- about an inch) while we did this so that it would be ready when we finished. As I fried the donuts, I opened a smaller tube of dough and popped the little pieces out for the kiddos to play with. They had a blast rolling them around, trying to make 'dough-men' and just being silly. This also kept them far away from the hot oil!

After I places the cooked donuts onto a paper towel lined plate to cool, we set coloring the frosting. Of course Jocie chose pink and Mew chose blue(always!). Once they were cool enough to touch, I turned them loose to decorate with the frosting and sprinkles. I think Mew did more EATING the frosting that putting it on the donuts. When they finished, both were more than willing to try them. Jocie took a full bite, but said she only wanted the frosting. Mew was too interested in the sweet sticky frosting to even take a bite. Oh well, they still had fun. And hey, I thought they were good, probably ate one too many and suffered a sugar rush from all the frosting HAHAHA.

As soon as we finished, they asked what was in store for tomorrow. Hmmm..the letter E!

I love Matthews blue "goatee!" This looked like a lot of fun. How did Jocie handle trying to get the sticky dough off her hands? That's always a problem for me when I make dough.

Ha Ha She asked me to put sugar on it for her so it wouldn't stick(she meant flour but kept saying sugar) so it wasn't too bad, and I think it being pre-packaged helped, was not as sticky.
