A - is for Apple

Yesterday was the first day for the foods of the alphabet activities. Of course, we started on A, for Apple. First thing we do is have Mew find the letter A within the collection of magnets on the fridge. There are 2 and he finds them both quickly as Jocie looks on incase he needs help. We keep the magnets on the table as a reminder of what we are working on. Next are the actual letter activities. For Mew, a wipe-off book where we trace A, both capital and lower case, and he practices writing them on his own. For Jocie, a worksheet where she can choose and circle pictures that start with the letter A and we talk about the letter sound etc.

Onto the fun stuff- the FOOD. Using an apple I sliced in half as a stamp, they dip them into finger paints and dab onto construction paper. This sort of grosses Jocie out so she decides to make finger dots with the paint instead. Mew follow suit but they have fun and ARE getting their hands 'dirty' right? Then, I give them a glob of applesauce on a plate and a little bowl with diced pieces of apple, We talk about the differences between the two and also how they are similar. Neither one wants to TOUCH the applesauce, so they run for spoons. Jocie dips her spoon into some of the 'juice' from the sauce and does manage to get some onto her lip, and then licks that off. "That's pretty good", she tells me so I ask her if she is going to eat more. "NO!!!" and she decides it would be more fun to dip the paint covered apple halves into the applesauce and make it all red. Mew sees this and wants to make his applesauce blue. OK have at it kiddos!

In the end, both kiddos ate their apple chunks, so we did manage to get something in our bellies! Mew was covered in blue finger paint but having a blast! Jocie was proud of herself(and I of her) for at least Tasting the applesauce! It was a GOOD time for all!

It's neat how you can incorporate the different age levels into the same activity. This is such a flexible plan/format you can just "roll with the punches" without sacrificing the objective.
