E is for Egg

Jocie and Mew are really getting into the food activities and look forward to them each day. Most days, the first thing they ask in the morning is, "what are we going to make today" or "can we do more fun food stuff". I am very glad we started this, I just hope I do not run out of new and fun ideas before they tire of doing them!

I decided that today we would focus on Eggs, and keep it to one main food since there were so many things we could do with them. We somehow seem to have lost all of the E magnets, so we started the activities off with paper and pencils. Mew is really getting a lot better at his lower case e- we will continue to work on these separate from the activities as well. Jocie also finished her paper in record time and they were ready to play.

Scrambled eggs are one of Mew's favorites, and it WAS lunch time, so we started there. They helped crack the eggs and mix them with milk in the bowl. We rinsed and set aside all cracked shells for our final project. We talked about how the eggs looked each step of the way. They watched the eggs cooked so they could see how they 'hardened' and changed in appearance. Jocie, who doesn't normally eat more than a few bites of hers, cleaned her plate and repeatedly told Mew how good he was at making eggs(since he did do most of the stirring I guess she gave him all of the credit and took none for herself). After they finished eating, I broke some eggs into a bowl and removed the yolks, so all that was left was looked basically like clear gooey liquid. I then poured it into a frying pan to fry it up and they both watched as it went from clear to white and 'hardened'. They thought it was pretty neat to watch how it changed when heated just like the scrambled eggs had.

Before we started, I made hard boiled eggs so that they would be ready when we needed them. So, our next activity was peeling the hard boiled eggs, again setting aside the shells for later. Once peeled, i sliced them in half and they each chose one piece to take to the table. We made small sails and taped them to a toothpick. They inserted the sails into their eggs to make little 'egg boats'. I added a small amount of water to their trays so that the egg halves would glide around smoothly and they had a blast sailing their little boats. Jocie was careful not to let hers flip or get smashed. Mew, on the other hand, had his smashed before too long. I think this was their favorite activity of the day!

Next we broke the set aside egg shells into small pieces and put them into bowls filled with water and food coloring. We let the shells soak for about 5 minutes and then drained them and set them to dry on paper towels. We now had green, red and blue shell pieces. On construction paper we drew an egg shape and covered it with glue. Then, they put on the egg shells pressing down to make them stick. (Even the ones that lumped up a little stayed put after they were dried) Mew was very particular about what pieces he used and only wanted to cover the outside edge of the egg. Jocie was not as concerned with what and where she placed the shells as she was about trying to keep her hands clean and free of glue. (that's my Jocie:) haha)
